There have been very few times in history where the Mac was the dominant platform for some major piece of software. Gaming isn’t a large platform, enterprise isn’t (though it’s growing a little bit every year), and generally Macs are way less common than Windows PCs. What this lead to is that many apps that come out often don’t come to Mac.

But one interesting thing that’s been happening over the past 5 years is that more software is starting on the Mac. ChatGPT’s desktop app, Claude’s desktop App, Atlas, Dia, even Arc are all apps that got their start on the Mac. Even now, with many of these apps being cross platform, they are usually kept more up to date on the macOS side of things.

As an avid Mac user, I personally really like this. I’ve preferred macOS for the better part of 10 years at this point and I’m glad that there’s more software coming out on the Mac and that it’s being seen as a priority. At work I use a ThinkPad T14 and, while it’s a perfectly fine computer, a MacBook Pro would totally be my preference.

As companies start to try and take more and more advantage of AI (whether or not you actually care about using the AI features) I can see a future where Macs start to come into the enterprise space more. The large focus from AI startups on macOS is a welcome change for me personally.
