Wait—So When is Murder Okay?
We all know about the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO, Brian Thompson, lots of people are celebrating his death, let's talk about it
Okay so right off the bat, I am not going to advocate for murder with this platform. That should be a given but I'm just going to say it right up front. Don't kill anyone and especially don't say I'm the one who gave you the idea. Don't.
Just.
Don't.
Okay now that that's out of the way let's get into it. The dude sucked, yeah. He's at least partially responsible for the deaths of so many people in this country who he was supposed to be protecting. The whole point of insurance is that everyone pays into this fund, it gets invested and such, then when you need to pull from the fund, the money is there.
Well, you see, what had happened was someone a long time ago thought it would be a good idea to turn this into a for-profit venture, which means that the insurance company has a vested interest in, well, not doing its job. This means that now the process is: pay into a system, it gets invested, and when you need the money, maybe you'll get it. Which is wholly idiotic.
A Man is Dead
So a guy is dead. That's not good. He had a family, kids, the like. Their dad was just killed. Does that mean he didn't deserve it? How many deaths was he responsible for? Was he responsible for more deaths than Osama Bin Laden? The IDF? Hamas? Hezbollah? Caesar? Nero? Did any of those people deserve to die? What's the criteria here?
Where's the Line?
Is it how many deaths they're responsible for? Hamas was responsible for carrying out the largest attack on the Jewish population since the holocaust. Are they deserving of death? Netanyahu has called for the deaths of millions of Palestinians and the IDF carried out those orders. Who's responsible for that? Is he deserving of death? Are the IDF soldiers deserving of death? I'm not certain on the numbers, but I'm pretty sure that Thompson is responsible for more deaths than Bin Laden—did he deserve to be murdered? Are soldiers justified in killing other soldiers? When are we allowed to kill people?
Is murder justified for religious reasons? Were the crusades justified? Were Native Americans justified in laying siege to Jamestown? Are doctors justified in letting women die because their religion is against abortion? Is that even murder? Is the abortion murder? Where's the line.
If the line is number of deaths then what's the number? One? Five? Ten? A Hundred? If it's ten then is someone who is responsible for nine deaths not deserving? Why is just one more the threshold? Is it percentage of wrongdoing? If someone is 50% responsible for the deaths is killing them justified? Well what about someone who's 49%? 51%?
Is the line just whether or not you agree with them? It's fine to try and assassinate Trump, but not Biden? If the shooter believed Biden was responsible for the deaths in Gaza, is that justified? Where is the line?
Closing Thoughts
I'm not really interested in going into a lengthy discussion about this, I really just want to get people to do some second order thinking—don't just react to things, think about why you're reacting that way. Focus on understanding the why because it's important in understanding the world and it's important in making decisions. I personally follow the teachings of Ferris Bueller and Obi Wan Kenobi: I don't believe in "-isms" and "Only a sith deals in absolutes" (ironically, an absolutism). If you're so interested, my only reaction is a lack of surprise. Same as the Trump assassination attempt. I don't have any more thoughts than that, honestly. If you have thoughts leave them down below or over on Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky, or email.
